Steinway on Stage at Home with Lara O’Brien

Wednesday 9 December 6pm-6.30pm

Our final Steinway on Stage at Home performance for 2020 is Lara O’Brien.

As a former student of Wangaratta High School, Lara presented practical assessment programs for both the Performance and Extensions themes for VCE Music Studies. This will be her fourth Steinway on Stage performance.

This performance will feature works from her final undergraduate recital. Lara  has just completed a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts at Monash University. She is looking forward to sharing her music with an audience again, even if it’s not live.

Lara’s program combines the old and the new, with works from iconic piano giants like Rachmaninov and Shostakovich, as well as recent works by living composers Tigran Hamasyan (Armenia) and Anne Cawrse (Australia).

SERGEI RACHMANINOV (1873-1943) – Suite in D minor, II. Lento

TIGRAN HAMASYAN (b. 1987) – Markos and Markos
Pianist and composer Hamasyan is known for his distinctive fusion of traditional Armenian melodies with jazz and rock styles. A 2017 release, Markos and Markos is from his third solo album, An Ancient Observer, and often regarded as one of his best works. The influence of Armenian culture and history is central to both Tigran’s composition and performance. This piece is no exception: the work is based on Armenian poet Zahrad’s poem Marc and Marc.

ANNE CAWRSE (b. 1981) – The Red Buoy
Adelaide-based composer Anne Cawrse has been a composer with The Firm: New Art Music since 2005, and is known for her distinctive lush textures and irresistible melodies. The Red Buoy made its debut in December 2018 and received exceptional reviews. The work has been described as “deliciously impressionist” and a “gorgeous character piece”. Inspired by Paul Signac’s painting The Red Buoy, Cawrse’s piece mirrors the vivid colours, textures and lighting found in the brushstrokes in shimmering detail.

DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH (1906-1975) – Prelude and Fugue in D minor, Op. 87, No. 24
